The Ancient Path • Shamanic Journey Wall Hanging
A handmade wall hanging created around the old paths of animal, tree and land.
At the centre is my painted Shaman Tree, its branches holding Raven, with two pale Deer standing beneath and Hare running across the upper woodland. At the roots of the tree sits the labyrinth, an ancient symbol of the journey inward and the path that eventually brings us back again.
Around them I have painted animal tracks and markings, allowing the creatures to leave their paths across the piece rather than simply appearing within it.
The painting measures approximately 14 × 16 cm and has been created on a piece of hardwood. Beneath it hangs a 14 cm naturally shed reindeer antler, painted with a white deer and small tracks following the curve of the antler.
I have joined the two pieces with Rowan berries and hand-worked spiral metal details, with further spirals forming part of the hanging itself.
Hare, Raven and Deer each carry something different into the journey. Hare moves between stillness and sudden movement. Raven watches from the branches. Deer walks quietly through the woodland. The labyrinth waits beneath them all.
Together they have become a piece about following what is older than ourselves: the tracks, signs and quiet knowing that can still be found when we begin to pay attention.
